Our duty (Karma) has to be done righteously (in dharma). We all have in us the 3 qualities of Thamas, Rajas and Saatwik gunas- (nature). When we are dominated by ignorance (Thamas) quality or thoughts we do the duty solely for the sake of the fruits thereof and resort to all sorts of subterfuges in order to gain the results we desire. End justifies the means in this case. When dominated by passion (Rajas) we become proud and pompous, and boast that we are the doers, the benefactors and the experiencers. And when we are dominated by qualities of calm serenity (Sathwa) we do our duties regardless of the fruits thereof and leave the result to the Lord. We will not worry whether it leads to success or failure, ever conscious of our duties and never of our rights. As a matter of fact, there is more joy in the actual doing, than in the result that accrues. When this attitude of Saatwik quality dominates in us, we will ever be happy and contented. One must have the firm faith that whatever happens, happens for the best, of course after having performed our duties to the best of our abilities.
